“Fall Vacation to the Rockies, with a stop at the JPL!”

We stayed at the Jasper Park Lodge as part of a week long vacation to the Canadian Rockies! My husband and I have slightly differing opinions on this resort, based on different personal tastes...

I'll try to summarize each of our likes/dislikes:

HUSBAND's:
*liked the isolated atmosphere, peace & quiet
*loved the views
*loved the rustic look and feel of the property
*golf course closed the day before we arrived... too bad!!
*disliked "no internet" available in our particular cabin, even though the hotel advertises internet available in all rooms
*disliked the pricing in the restaurants
*disliked the lack of service at time of checkout...

MINE:
*loved the lake views & peacefulness of this resort
*overall, the service was very good from the staff we encountered
*appreciated the free coffee/tea in the rooms
*housekeeping did a very good job...never an issue
*was disappointed that there wasn't internet in our room... I am a junkie, what can I say... on the bright side, free internet was available in the business centre, 24 hours/day... this was helpful.
*the spa did not impress, we actually booked a couples massage at the Mountain Day Spa in town (Jasper) instead
*disliked the "older decor" style... I prefer a little more modern of a look when thinking of a 5 star resort
*felt the price for food/drink was steep... $4.20 with a tip expected for a regular size hot chocolate TO GO! I felt obligated to leave a $5 bill for the gentleman who pressed the button from the hockey arena style hot chocolate machine... :(
*disliked the spread out design of the property
*food was excellent in the restaurants, but $26 each for (buffet) breakfast, plus tip seemed a bit much considering I max out at 1 plate and a bit of fruit.

There are a lot of great things to see on the way up to Jasper, but once you're there, its very isolated, and not much to do.... We enjoyed a dinner @ L&W Family Restaurant, and another dinner at the Jasper Pizza Place... both were "okay" in my opinion... We visited "Hinton" and I was happy to grab a Tim Horton's coffee!!! It was worth the 45 minute drive!!!!! (we visited friends in Hinton for dinner... it wasn't just a Timmie's run...)

The Jasper Park Lodge is full of history & heritage... Likely, my opinion of this place would have been slightly higher if the weather had been slightly more comfortable... there was a lot of rain & gloomy weather, and -6 C temperatures... a summer vacation might have impressed me a little more as it was too cold to enjoy the Muskoka chairs by the lake this time!!

Happy Trails to all :)

“Way overpriced for what you get”

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

Oct 14, 2008

My wife and I stayed for one night on the Sunday of the Thanksgiving weekend. Upon arrival and three trips around the property trying find our Deluxe lake front accomodations, I was quite disappointed. I was assured at the time of reservations that the unit I had booked came with a fireplace, It had not. When I acquired about this, I was told that they were full and no other units were available, so I was stuck with this one @ $520.00 per night. Dinner was very good in the Edith Cavell dinning room, but again WAY over priced for the value of the meal. $380.00 for two c/w a half liter on wine, tip in. Breakfast was buffet style at 24.95 per head and other than the toast (which you prepared yourself) and the sauteed mushrooms everything else was cold. After visiting the other Fairmont resorts in Banff and Lake Louise. The FJL. reminded me of a kids summer camp, and on this particular weekend the kids were included. The pool was overrun by them. NOW !!! the property is beautifully maintained and the view of the mountains are spectacular, but I feel that for your dollar value it is unbelievably overpriced. Over $1050.00 dollars for the one night stay, taxes and tips in. My I suggest to find a reasonable price accommodation in Jasper, and go to the FJL. for lunch or a drink and walk the grounds.

“Fantastic”

First, let me preface my review by saying that we booked one of the basic rooms at a rate of $149/night but when we got there we had been upgraded to the Lakefront Suite and were charged only $99/night, so we were predisposed to think kindly of the resort.

The suite was beautiful, with a walkout to the lake, a fireplace, a huge comfy bed, and a fantastic bathroom. No complaints whatsoever, although I can't imagine paying the rack rate for it.

Check in and out was a breeze. The property is exactly as it appears on the website - it is a country retreat, with lots to do including canoeing, horseback riding, etc (none of which we did, as we were there for only two nights). We did use the pool, and this is the only area where I had issues with the hotel. The changerooms/showers were... not good. The showers had peeling paint and were not particularly clean. The hot tub was fine. The pool needed some freshening (new paint, etc) and don't believe the "indoor/outdoor" - it's an outdoor pool with basically an entrance from inside. However, it is heated, and floating in it while watching the geese fly into the sunset was heavenly.

We only ate at the Emerald, but the food was excellent, and the view can't be beat. Pricey, though.

This is a heritage resort, so you will have to park your car a little bit away from your room. If that bothers you, the staff are more than willing to valet park your car for you, but it's really not a far distance.

Overall, we had a fantastic two-day birthday vacation, and we will return to the Fairmont.

“Faded holiday camp”

My wife and I chose the Jasper Park Lodge based on reviews on Tripadviser although with some reservation in view of various comments from previous guests. My reservations were with hindsight well-founded.

We booked a three night stay from 3 September 2008 in a de luxe suite at C$610 per night. Our impression on entering property (after driving from Lake Louise) was of it being something mid way between a run down holiday camp and a old persons home. Very depressing. But never mind, we thought, we have a suite overlooking the lake (which is breathtakingly beautiful).

Our concerns rose as we arrived at the reception desk in the rather bleak main lodge building, a situation not helped by the rather officous attitude of the 'security staff' and parking monitors.

On checking in we were given a 'suite' tucked away at the back of the property at the end of a row of eight single storey cabins in an area that looked rather like a low income housing estate.

In response to my complaint I was told that the property was full and that they could not offer anything near the lake. Our 'suite' was difficult to find and park near to for unloading luggage. Furthermore, our arrival coincided with arrival of three coach loads of corporate 'guests' on what looked like a tourist coach trip - many of whom were staying in rooms adjoing ours - and the whole area was swarming with people.

When we managed to get into our 'suite' it was awful - hot, stuffy and cramped and certainly not properly describable as a suite let alone 'de luxe' - and certainly not worth C$610 per night.

I returned to reception (which because of the ridiculous and confusing one way system meant exiting the property and coming back in again) and cancelled my whole reservation. I declined the reservation clerk's offer to find another room (remember he had previously said that they were totally full) and left to find somewhere else in Jasper to stay.

If you want to play golf (and if you get accomodation overlooking the lake) the JPL may be a good property to stay at - allbeit at a very expensive rate for what it is. It is in no way comparable with the other Fairmont properties in Banff and Lake Louise. When I said that to the receptionist he said that it is not because it is a 'resort property' - although what that excuses escapes me.

My advice: if planning a visit to Jasper think twice about the JPL.

Stayed here 2 nights August 2008, arrived by Train from Toronto. Pick-up service from Train Station was $5 one way.
I had a Fairmont Room, it was quite nice, all amenities satisfactory, bathroom satisfactory. Internet access was available in the room. Small television.
The resort is on a large parcel of ground, around one side of the the edge of a lake. This can make getting around a bit of a chore, but the Bell Desk run a Golf Buggy Shuttle service that will come and pick you up from your room & take you to the Lodge - a very good idea.
I ate in the Emerald Lounge, and the food was good. Atmosphere was good, service was good. View is excellent out over the Lake.
Breakfast is available in 2 locations, with the buffet downstairs being quite good.
Concierge staff were excellent. Bell Desk staff were excellent, Reception staff were excellent. No hassles here.
There is a boitique Shopping Mall below the Lodge, and it also has some "essentials" as well - writing pads, books, milk, water, etc. Galleries, Golf Shop, Spa, etc.
There is a golf course attached to this resort, but I didn't play there. It is reputed to be very good.
